I havent finished all 3 volumes yet, but I really enjoyed what I have read. Having already read many texts on the seerah of the prophet and the khulafa rashidoon, I skimmed through most of the first volume, only stopping to read in depth about sections that i was unfamiliar with. One of my favorite sections is when the author writes about Abdullah ibn Zubair's defense of Makkah from the forces of al-Hajjaj. Written by a muslim, the writing is not dry facts for the academics, but rather captivati..more
A really detailed 3 Volume history of Islam. Currently , I am reading second volume and it is an eye opener . Considering how common and 'in' it has become to hate Islam ( especially by pseudo-intellectual Muslims) , reading books like this one can remove a lot of misconceptions and let you discover history as it was.
A great learning experience about the golden age of Islam.
Absolutely awful, in my opinion. I was expecting an unbiased history of a religion, but the bias was apparent from page one. I would recommend The Oxford History of Islam instead.
This is a translated work of Akbar Shah Khan Najeebabadi's Urdu book Tareekh-e-Islam that was published in the 1920s, with an added modern revision by Safiur-Rahman Mubarakpuri, acclaimed author of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)'s biography, The Sealed Nectar Biography of Prophet Muhammad. As noble intentioned as it is, the translation isn't great and can be dramatically improved to make it easier and more enjoyable to read and I do hope the publishers strive to achieve this in future editions. The way 'Uthmān ibn 'Affān is being portrayed in this book, is totally unacceptable.
It's great it really gives you an idea of what it was like before Islam came and how it was after. It also shows you what kind of person prohet Muhammad(sws)was during his life.

THE NEW CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF ISLAM
The New Cambridge History of Islam offers a comprehensive history of Islamic civilisation, tracing its development from its beginnings in seventh century Arabia to its wide and varied presence in the globalised world of today. Under the leadership of the Prophet Muh.ammad, the Muslim community coalesced from a scattered, desert population and, following his death, emerged from Arabia to conquer an empire which, by the early eighth century, stretched from India in the east to Spain in the west. By the eighteenth century, despite political fragmentation, the Muslim world extended from West Africa to South East Asia. Today, Muslims are also found in significant numbers in Europe and the Americas, and make up about one fifth of the world’s population.
To reflect this geographical distribution and the cultural, social and religious diversity of the peoples of the Muslim world, The New Cambridge History of Islam is divided into six volumes. Four cover historical developments, and two are devoted to themes that cut across geographical and chronological divisions themes ranging from social, political and economic relations to the arts, literature and learning. Each volume begins with a panoramic introduction setting the scene for the ensuing chapters and exam ining relationships with adjacent civilisations. Two of the volumes one historical, the other thematic are dedicated to the developments of the last two centuries, and show how Muslims, united for so many years in their allegiance to an overarching anddistinct tradition, have sought to come to terms with the emergence of Western hegemony and the transition to modernity.
The time is right for this new synthesis reflecting developments in scholarship over the last generation. The New Cambridge History of Islam is an ambitious enterprise directed and written by a team combining established authorities and innovative younger scholars. It will be the standard reference for students, scholars and all those with enquiring minds for years to come.
