I'm trying to set up a machine here with UltraVNC on Windows Vista with UAC off. The problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl + Alt + Del (CAD) to the Windows Vista machine, and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Is there a workaround or a solution?

Doesn't VNC have a feature to send CAD? With RealVNC you can click the VNC-window's icon (at the top left corner) and click 'Send Ctrl-Alt-Del'. Maybe there's something similar? Otherwise you can of course use RealVNC's client.

After much searching, I gave up and set group policy on the machines to not require Ctrl+Alt+Del.

The latest release of UltraVNC and VNCScan have resolved this issue. There's a pretty thorough post of it at http://vncscan.com/blog/2010/09/ultravnc-and-windows-7-ctrlaltdel/

Set your UAC to the second-lowest level. This will allow you to send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the remote computers through VNC and other remote software.

I wrote a library called SasLibEx that can simulate the CAD keypress sequence, even when UAC is disabled. Some of my customers use it with UltraVNC.

There is a registry setting that can be changed that will allow Ctrl + Alt + Del to work. I'm not sure what the setting exactly is, as the incorrect setting was detected by VNC and provided me with the option to make the change itself. Here's how I went about it:
- Log in to the remote computer (so that when you connect via the VNC Viewer you won't be prompted with the 'Ctrl + Alt + Del' screen).
- On another computer, use the VNC Viewer to connect to the remote computer.
- Press the Send Ctrl+Alt+Del to Host button on the toolbar. At this point, the VNC Server shows a message, 'UAC is diabled, fix registry'. Click OK.
- After this registry fix, Ctrl + Alt + Del commands work as expected.
This post TRUE solution for Ctrl-Alt-Del in Win7? + other issues gets credit for pointing me in the right direction.

How can I send ctrl+alt+del to a remote computer over Remote Desktop?
For example, if I wanted to change the local admin password on a remote PC using a Remote Desktop connection, it would be helpful to be able to send the ctrl+alt+del key sequence to the remote computer.
I would normally do this by pressing ctrl+alt+del and selecting the change password option. But I can't send ctrl+alt+del using Remote Desktop since this 'special' key series is always handled by the local client.

ctrl+alt+end is the prescribed way to do this.

One option is to use the on-screen keyboard from within the first RDP session.

In newer versions of Windows there is a link to
Windows Security
in the start menu that will get you to the same place.Never tried ctrl+alt+end - very sweet. I'll have to stick that in the storage space with ctrl+alt+ins for VMware. I personally avoid using the mouse as much as possible - weird for a Windows admin, right?

In the Remote Desktop help, it says you must use ctrl+alt+end , so that is the correct, official way.

I am using RealVNC viewer on Windows. I sometimes find it very difficult to shift from VNC to Windows. I have to use F8 -> Minimize and then Alt + Tab. I wish I had more flexibility. Can the following key combinations be somehow enabled?
- Win + D -> I see my Windows desktop.
- Alt + Tab switches between VNC and Windows applications.
- Ctrl + Tab switches between VNC subwindows.

I found two solutions:
1 (from: http://www.realvnc.com/products/viewerplus/1.0/docs/af1069655.html)
Airparrot version 2.7.5 serial. Configuring your keyboard
By default, and with the exception of CTRL-ALT-DELETE and the function key used to open the shortcut menu, key presses affect the host computer and not the client. To reverse this behavior for the application-level keys listed below, turn off Pass special keys directly to VNC Server. Note this property is on the Inputs tab.
Affected keys/combinations: WINDOWS (also known as START), PRINT SCREEN, ALT-TAB, ALT-ESCAPE, CTRL-ESCAPE.
2 (from: http://www.physnet.uni-hamburg.de/physnet/vnc/winvncviewer.html)
Keystrokes such as Ctrl-Esc and Alt-Tab may be interpreted at the local (viewer) machine. If you want to send them to the remote machine, you can use the options on the viewer menu to send individual Ctrl-down, Ctrl-up, Alt-down and Alt-up keystrokes. For example, to type Ctrl-Esc on the remote machine, send Ctrl-down using the menu, press Esc, and then send Ctrl-up (or just tap the Ctrl key) to release the Ctrl key at the remote end.

I am running the Gnome Desktop on the VNC Server, so I followed these steps to implement the two solutions recommended by user1403360:
- Turn off Viewer -> Options -> Inputs -> 'Pass special keys directly to VNC Server' (i.e. parameter SendSpecialKeys=FALSE)Alt+Tab will now switch between Windows applications
- In Gnome Desktop -> Preferences -> KeyboardShortcuts, change 'Move between windows using a popup window' => Ctrl+TabCtrl+Tab will now switch between VNC sub-windows

Learning has never been so easy!
I have been having a problem accessing Windows 7 pcs through VNC in that Windows 7 does not accept the CAD command from 3rd party software.
This can be a problem if you are trying to access a users pc over the network and you need to ask someone to press CAD to gain access.
The solution I propose is one in which you must preconfigure the windows 7 pcs through remote desktop..
This can be a problem if you are trying to access a users pc over the network and you need to ask someone to press CAD to gain access.
The solution I propose is one in which you must preconfigure the windows 7 pcs through remote desktop..
3 Steps total
Step 1: Enable Secure Attention Sequence
Microsofts term for CAD is SAS (Secure Attention Sequence) and this is not enabled by default on Windows 7 pcs. So first things first we need to enable this through local group policy.. open gpedit.msc on the pc and go to the following location: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Logon Options. Double Click on 'Disable or enable software Secure Attention Sequence.' This will open a new window.. Change the setting to 'enabled' and in the options drop down box change it to 'Services and Ease of Access applications.'
Step 2: Disable VNC service
In order to replace the winvnc.exe file with the patched version we must disable the vnc service on the pc in question..
Open services.msc on the pc and scroll down to uvnc_service. Stop the service and we can then move onto the next step.

Step 3: Replace the WinVNC.exe File
I have a patched version of the WinVnc.exe file here http://www.4shared.com/file/9X67SDAu/winvnc.html. All you need to do is replace the same file on your pc and you are on your way to accessing windows 7 through VNC!
So just replace the file in the UltraVNC folder in program files on your root drive. e.g. C:Program FilesUltraVNCWinvnc.exe

Once you have done this restart the pc and enjoy accessing it through VNC!

- JalapenoThomas929 Feb 7, 2013 at 01:57pmFYI, you still need to enable SAS to get uVNC to work in 7, but you no longer need a patched executable; the newest uVNC should support Win 7.

I need to send a CtrlAltDelete to a remote machine through Remote Desktop. The CtrlAltDelete is being intercepted by Windows 8, regardless of whether the remote desktop has focus or is in full screen. I'm remoting in to a Windows XP machine, and I've tried launching Remote Desktop through both the desktop and the Modern UI. How can I send a CtrlAltDelete?
I'd rather not install anything on the machine.

If you're using an RDP within another RDP, Ctrl+Alt+End may not work as expected -- it sometimes could bring up the Task Manager / Change Password screen for the outer RDP.
Instead, to bring up the Task Manager / Change Password screen for the inner RDP :
- Bring up the on-screen keyboard (Start > Run, type
osk.exe
) - Hold Ctrl+Alt on the top-level machine andclick Del on the OSK.
This should work for any number of nested RDPs.

On a Mac, running OSX, try fn+ctrl+alt+delete
This works with Microsoft Remote Desktop client for OSX.

Scenario: Your PC (node_1) and Remote PC (node_2).
Open the onscreen keyboard
Start -> All Programs -> Accesories -> Ease of Access -> On-Screen Keyboard
on node_2.When you want to send ctrl+alt+del, press Ctrl+Alt in node_1 and click del in node_2. (Worked for me in node_1=XP and node_2=Win7)

STICKY KEYS IS THE ANSWER
There is another way which will work regardless of OS and as many nested RDC sessions as you can wrap your head round. With the focus in the inner most RDC session, quickly press the shift key 5 times. This will bring up the Sticky Keys window, and one window for each level of nesting. When prompted to turn on sticky keys, click Yes/Ok for your most nested session, and No/Cancel for the outer sessions. Now with the focus still on the inner most nested session, press ctrl (then let go), press alt (then let go), press delete.
Tadah!
To turn off sticky keys, with the focus on the nested session, press shift 6 times and click No/Cancel.

It isn't a very quick or graceful solution, but if Ctrl+Alt+End doesn't work for what you need, you can open the on-screen keyboard in the remote desktop, and click the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys with the mouse.

You can also try installing Autohotkey on the server, and create a key binding that works to send Ctrl+Alt+Delete without Windows 8 intercepting it. A mini-tutorial is available as well

Problem
Unable to use Ctrl+Alt+Del feature on remote desktop running Vista OS/ Windows 7/ Windows 2008.
Cause
Problems to use Ctrl+Alt+Del feature on remote desktops running Vista OS/ Windows 7/ Windows-2008 may occur due to one or more of the following reasons:
- User Access Control(UAC) is disabled in the remote machine running Vista OS/ Windows 7/ Windows 2008.
- Secure Attention Sequence(SAS) is disabled in the remote machine running Vista OS/ Windows 7/ Windows 2008.
Resolution
Enable UAC in the Remote Desktop running Vista OS/ Windows 7/ Windows 2008
Goto Start → Run → type msconfig. This opens the System Configuration Window.
Click on Tools tab.
Locate and Click
on 'Enable UAP' or 'Enable UAC' option item. This opens a Command Prompt window that automatically executes and runs certain process to Enable UAC.
Close the cmd window when done. Also close msconfig window.
Restart the computer for the changes to apply.
Set the Policy :
Execute Gpedit.msc from Run prompt.
Goto 'Computer Configuration' -> 'Admin Templates' -> 'Windows Components' -> 'Windows Logon Options'
In Windows LogOn Option , double click 'Disable enable software Secure Attention Sequence' Select 'Enable' option and 'Services and Ease of Access application'
Click OK.

I also had this problem, with client win8.1 and server windows server 2008 R2. And there was no way to open the screen to change the password remotely because no CTRL+ALT+DEL or CTRL+ALT+END worked both on client and on server.Opening the on-screen keyboard on server also didn't worked and nothing happend. For me, the solution was to open the on-screen keyboard on client machine, then open the remote window and press the CTRL+ALT+DEL set of keys and worked for me.
